Cybersecurity is a really fascinating industry. While I love my job as a Systems Engineer, I think it’s also important to have a well-rounded skillset, and that includes how to break into systems as well as how to protect them.
Also, Ethical Hacking is just really fun. I quite often download vulnerable machines from Vulnhub, or login to HackTheBox or TryHackMe just to keep my skills fresh playing in CTFs. I also have a few machines in my homelab that I like to test and try to break.
TCM Security have some great courses. I really loved doing the Practical Ethical Hacking course and the Linux Privilege Escalation course.
I have a background in Web Application development, and still manage some Websites outside of my day job, so understanding how Web Apps can be vulnerable to attack, and what things to look for is an important skill.
I took the Malware Analysis course because honestly, Malware and Viruses have always fascinated me. I used to work for a PC repair shop when I was younger, and there were always customers coming in with virus infections on their Windows XP computers. In another of my jobs I was managing lots of WordPress sites, and in the first month of working for that company I had a ticket come in about malicious content on one of the websites, which it turned out the site had been attacked and was riddled with Malware which I had to clean up. Along with Ethical Hacking, Malware analysis is a really interesting field.
